Momentary Delight is the creation of Darren Beem, a forty-something guy who lives in Boston, MA with his wife and two precocious little girls. Momentary Delight is my attempt to engage in a conversation about life. It’s a chance to be real. I don’t even pretend to have all the answers, but hopefully along the way, we can ask some pretty good questions.

I don’t feign to call myself a writer, but that said writing is a valuable process for me. It’s a process that gives me the opportunity to explore ideas. I love the messiness of the creative process, but at the same time, it can be frustratingly unpredictable. Occasionally, we will find strawberries in the brambles, but then along the way, we may step into a pile of manure. The title of this blog, Momentary Delight really describes the process of writing and creation for me. It’s a quest and a journey in search of those things that delight. Those moments when everything becomes clear, are the figurative strawberries that I am seeking. When you do find them, it becomes a delight.

There is a great quote in the movie “Field of Dreams.”  Ray Kinsella, the protagonist is on a quest for the transcendent. He builds a baseball field and feels led to seek out Terence Mann, a reclusive Sixties writer, who lives in Boston. Somehow, Ray believes that Mann will understand his quest.  Ray says to Mann,  ”You once wrote, there comes a time when all the cosmic tumblers have clicked into place and the universe opens itself up for a few seconds to show you what’s possible.”

I would like this blog to be such a place, where occasionally the universe will open up and we can discuss things of meaning, where we will discover what is possible–where we can experience grace together. Maybe there will be a few reviews of books that have been particularly meaningful to me. Maybe we can discuss articles, or link to other blogs.

Since the very best conversations have at least two people, I hope you will be encouraged to join the discussion along the way.

Lastly, one final disclaimer. . .I am not a philosopher or theologian. I’m just a simple guy who likes to think and dream about the future and who loves the simple things–a day at the ballpark, a breakfast with his daughter, putting his girls to sleep, chatting over a cup of coffee, an early morning run (when I can wake up early), or reading a book while listening to music with the afternoon sun shining in through the window.

Peace and Blessings,

Darren
